Aoe1 is hyper aggressive and can often end in the tool (2nd) age, unlike Aoe2, because villagers are very squishy and have no where to hide. Walls are also difficult to use, there aren't really quick wall shenanigans. Tweaking on civ bonuses.
If it falls too close to either AoE1 or AoE2, it can feel like a wasted opportunity. Perhaps the way to make it as close to an "AoE1.5" as possible would be to keep the tech tree, but add as many of the quality of life features from AoE2 as possible. Land trading, gates, market trading, garrisoning, smoother hills etc etc.

Little to no content for age 2 players, and age 1 players get forced to buy aoe2 definitive plus the age 1 dlc (again). It also makes you wonder, since theyre 2 separate game modes, will we get return of rome dlc in the future? dlc for the dlc sounds weird.
