LAUGH, CLOWN, LAUGH (Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, 1928), produced and directed by Herbert Brenon, returns Lon Chaney to playing the role of a tragic clown, a type of role he earlier portrayed in his earlier screen adaptation to HE WHO GETS SLAPPED (MGM, 1924).
NOTES: LAUGH, CLOWN, LAUGH is certainly one of the loveliest of Chaney's films. The film was directed by Herbert Brenon, the autocratic but effective director of PETER PAN (1924) , BEAU GESTE (1927) , and A KISS FOR CINDERELLA (1925) , and was stunningly photographed by James Wong Howe, probably the finest cinematographer to work on a Chaney ...
Jun 12, 2016 · On the surface, Laugh, Clown, Laugh seems to have all the trappings of a Chaney hit. He plays Tito, a clown who falls for his adopted daughter, Simonetta (Loretta Young). The girl is turning into a woman (Everyone seems astonished that this is happening. Clearly someone skipped biology 101.) and is starting to wear roses in her hair and everything.
A professional clown and a self-indulgent count learn to help each other with their problems, but then become romantic rivals. As professional clowns Tito and Simon are traveling, they happen upon an abandoned child, whom they take in and name Simonetta. When Simonetta is older, she becomes a circus performer herself.
