In 1980, three years after the original Smokey and the Bandit (1977) blew up at the box office and transformed Burt Reynolds from Hollywood star to Hollywood legend, the same director and cast reunited for a sequel, Smokey and the Bandit II. Reynolds himself felt it was unnecessary and just a cold move to make money, which it was and which it did.
