The Five Man Electrical Band was a rock group from Canada's capital city of Ottawa, best known for their 1971 hit "Signs". The group consisted of Les Emmerson, Brian Rading, Ted Gerow, Mike Belanger and Rick Belanger. Originally recording and touring as The Staccatos, they chose the title of their second album (1969) as the new name for the band.
After deciding to go in a different direction, the Staccatos added Ted Gerow (keyboards) to the band, followed shortly by Craig’s departure. While recording their second album, their producer, Nick Venet, prompted the band to change their name, as the Staccatos sounded “dated.”

Adding keyboardist Ted Gerow and leaving behind Vern Craig, the Staccatos released their second album, Five Man Electrical Band, in 1968, and renamed themselves after it the following year, partially at the suggestion of Rading. They continued to record for Capitol Records, traveling to L.A. to record singles such as "It Never Rains on Maple Lane."
