Barnaby grudgingly begins to suspect that an arson investigator that he has trusted for years is involved in setting fires and then ruling them as accidental in order to get a cut of the insurance money.
"Barnaby Jones," a retired private investigator who returns to work after his son is killed in the line of duty. Along with his daughter-in-law Betty, played by Lee Meriwether, Barnaby investigates a variety of cases, ranging from murder and robbery to espionage and blackmail.
The death of a woman's sister is ruled a suicide, but the woman doesn't buy it and hires Barnaby to look into it. What he discovers is a man who preys upon lonely single women for information so he can steal from their businesses that they work for, and he may have had something to do with the woman's death.
