Frank Owen Salisbury was an English artist who specialized in portraits, large canvases of historical and ceremonial events, stained glass and book illustration. In his heyday, Salisbury was valued and admired on both sides of the Atlantic. In 1901, Salisbury married Alice Maude with whom he had twin daughters.
The two most iconic painted images of Churchill during the War, “The Siren Suit” and “Blood, Sweat and Tears” were by Salisbury in 1942 and these would inspire other artists. Also in 1942 he painted “Winston Churchill in the Robes of Chancellor of Bristol University” apparently without permission of ‘Family Churchill’.

Frank O. Salisbury 1874–1962. British painter and stained-glass designer. He was born in Harpenden, the son of a plumber and glazier, and was apprenticed to his brother in a stained-glass workshop in St Albans before winning a scholarship to the *Royal Academy, London, where he studied 1892–7.
