As the second largest and southernmost Cook Island, Mangaia rises dramatically with 60-meter-high cliffs of fossilized coral. Geologically rich, it boasts a central volcanic plateau soaring 4,750 meters above the ocean floor. Named Mangaia-Nui-Neneva by Aitutakian Tamaeu, it captivated Captain Cook in 1777.
