A first-century synagogue and a marketplace were soon brought to light after having been covered by a series of small-scale landslides for the last 2,000 years.
The city of Magdala was originally excavated by the Franciscans from 1971 to 1973. A new wave of excavations began in 2006 and is ongoing.
