Cusits IV was a justice of the peace for Northampton County and, for a brief time, represented the County in the House of Burgesses. In 1727, he was appointed to the Governor's Council in the British Colony of Virginia, where he served for twenty-two years. John Custis IV died on November 14, 1749.
