Taking the hike up from Ferndell through Griffith Park, grabbing a snack at The Trails Cafe, and exploring the free museum is an excellent thing to do in Los Angeles. The Art Deco building of the observatory was built in 1935 and is free to enter! There is a lot to see inside so expect to spend 1-3 hours here.

Dec 7, 2018 · Without much extra effort, the hike can be extended up the bottom of Western Canyon to get more Griffith Park views, taking the outing from 0.5 miles round trip with 65 feet of elevation change to 1.75 miles round trip with 260 feet of elevation change (or venture farther yet and hike up to the Griffith Observatory). This trail starts at the Griffith Observatory. You'll take the W Trail to the Mount Hollywood trail. Next, you'll have the opportunity to stop at Captain's Roost view, Dante's view and lastly the peak of Mount Hollywood itself. This trail does not go to the Hollywood sign, but it does offer great views of the sign, and of downtown.
For this hike, we focused on a short, 2-mile roundtrip hike that starts and ends at the Griffith Observatory entrance (see map below). This short hike is a perfect introduce to Griffith Park and provide time to enjoy the observatory. If you are eager to enjoy a sunset or night hike, this is it! The observatory is open Tuesday through Sunday.
Feb 13, 2017 · This trail features views of Griffith Observatory and the Hollywood sign. The trail is steep in sections and can get slippery after it rains. Use caution in these areas. The trail is well-marked and well-maintained. Keep an eye out for lovely wildflowers blooming along the trail in the spring. This is a great sunrise or sunset hike.
Mount Hollywood Trail. From Griffith Observatory to Mount Hollywood is 3 miles round trip with 500-foot elevation gain. On clear days the entire basin is spread out before you from the San Gabriel Mountains to the Pacific Ocean. Sometimes mounts San Gorgonio, Baldy and San Jacinto can be seen. The view at night can be spectacular, too.
