1928 (1 August) Lance Todd takes up his new job as the Salford team manager following an advert placed in the Salford City Reporter. The former Wigan played had previously been secretary of North Shore Golf Club and planning to return to New Zealand, delaying due to his wife’s illness. Under Todd Salford became the outstanding team of the 1930s.
Cavendish became Salford Football Club in 1879. The first match as Salford was at Dewsbury on 4 October 1879. The following week heralded the first home match at New Barnes against Widnes, on 11 October 1879. The result was a draw with one try each. Salford struggled to attract support as there were few local players in the team.

[2] [3] The city is situated in a meander on the western bank of the River Irwell which forms its boundary with Manchester and its city centre. During the Civil War of 1640–49, Salford was Royalist whilst Manchester was Parliamentarian. Apart from that, visitors have found it hard to tell the difference between them for hundreds of years. When I was a kid growing up in north Manchester, the difference between Manchester and Salford was that while Manchester was grim, Salford was grimmer.
