Admiral. David Satcher, (born March 2, 1941) is an American physician, and public health administrator. He was a four-star admiral in the United States Public Health Service Commissioned Corps and served as the 10th Assistant Secretary for Health, and the 16th Surgeon General of the United States .

Apr 26, 2024 · David Satcher is an American medical doctor and public health administrator who was the 16th surgeon general of the United States from 1998 to 2002. The son of a small farmer, Satcher nearly died of whooping cough at age two because his family had little access to health care.
David Satcher, M.D., Ph.D., Founder of the Satcher Health Leadership Institute (SHLI), has dedicated his career to uncovering the social determinants of health disparities. Dr. Satcher joined the Morehouse School of Medicine in 2002 with the National Center for Primary Care and in 2006 founded SHLI.
A physician-scientist and public health administrator, Dr. Satcher was a four-star admiral in the United States Public Health Service Commissioned Corps. As the 16th Surgeon General of the United States, from 1998-2002, he was the first African-American to hold the position.
