Henry Wilson (born Feb. 16, 1812, Farmington, N.H., U.S.—died Nov. 22, 1875, Washington, D.C.) was the 18th vice president of the United States (1873–75) in the Republican administration of President Ulysses S. Grant and a national leader in the antislavery movement.
Wilson introduced the first post war civil rights bill in 1865 and influenced Congress’s passage of constitutional amendments to guarantee citizenship rights to African Americans. Elected vice president in 1873, he became ill shortly after taking office and died on November 22, 1875.
