Mar 7, 2023 · Piggly Wiggly was born in the South in 1916, then grew so fast it was in every region of the U.S. by the end of 1918 (via Tennessee Historical Quarterly). By 1923, Piggly Wiggly was the third largest retail grocer in the U.S. The chain wasn't able to maintain its dominance for long, however.
