John Randolph Thune (⫽ ˈ θ uː n ⫽ THOON; born January 7, 1961) is an American politician serving as the senior United States senator from South Dakota, a seat he has held since 2005. Thune is in his fourth Senate term and is the Senate minority whip, a post he has held since 2021.
In 2022, John became the second South Dakotan in history to be elected to a fourth term in the U.S. Senate. For the 118th Congress, John serves on the Agriculture, Nutrition, and Forestry Committee; the Commerce, Science, and Transportation Committee; and the Finance Committee.
