Definition of power noun in Oxford Advanced Learner's Dictionary. Meaning, pronunciation, picture, example sentences, grammar, usage notes, synonyms and more.
What is power? Much like energy, the word power is something we hear a lot. In everyday life it has a wide range of meanings. In physics however, it has a very specific meaning. It is a measure of the rate at which work is done (or similarly, at which energy is transferred).
Someone with power has physical strength or they're in control of things. So a weakling who's in charge of a business still has a lot of power. Power comes from the Latin word potere, which means "to be able." But things with power are much more than able — they're able to exert a lot of force.
