Your understanding of annulment is a little off, I think. The Church doesn’t grant annulments. An annulment is a declaration that the marriage is not believed to be sacramentally valid. So, presumably there was a declaration of nullity because the Church authorities examined the evidence and did not believe that the marriage was valid.
