     First

     ALTER TABLE tablename ADD COLUMN changecount BIGINT NOT NULL DEFAULT 0; -

     for all relevant tables. Then whenever you want to submit a change, use not only

     UPDATE tablename SET whatever WHERE id=whatever

     but

     UPDATE tablename SET whatever, changecount=changecount+1 WHERE id=whatever AND changecount=the_changecount_you_remembered_from_loading_the_object

     now if a user submits a change, it will update the changecount - another user submitting a change to the same object, but loaded from older state, can be told "another user has just changed blah blah"

     I'd guess that one of your m or i is a size_t or something like that? Then the second arg of the MAX macro is size_t, too. Perhaps it thus evaluates to (size_t)-1?

     In any case this code looks suspicious. Index arrays such as your y[] that you'd have to cast from char to int smell of a weak type design. Indexing with char without taking care of the possible signedness problems is just dangerous. Index types should always be unsigned types.

     A macro like your MAX that makes implicit assumptions that both expressions have the same signedness and width is also dangerous. Replace it with a function intmax_t MAX(intmax_t, intmax_t) or something like that.

     Redesign the types properly and your problem will solve itself.

     clang as a compiler is quite good for debugging macros. Other than gcc e.g he is able to keep track of the expansion of macros and is sometimes able to put your nose on a problematic macro expansion.

     In Java, String objects are already immutable.

     I can't speak to how the Java language creators specifically made String immutable, but here are some guidelines that you can follow to make your own classes immutable:

     • Don't use setter methods.
     • Make all fields private and final.
     • Don't allow methods to be overwritten (either make class final or use a factory pattern).
     • If any fields are objects of mutable type, take care when using those objects: Defensively clone them when returning those objects off of a getter method or receiving them in the constructor, and don't provide methods which modify the mutable objects.
