The City of Stockton was officially incorporated on July 23, 1850. Stockton’s charter from the State of California dates from 1851. By 1854, Stockton was the fourth largest city in California. Today, Stockton is the county seat of San Joaquin County with a current population of 446,000.
As of 2021, 80 individuals have served as Stockton's mayor since its incorporation as a city in California. [3] Ten mayors have served non consecutive terms, the first being E.S. Holden and the most recent being Arnold Rue. The mayor is chosen every four years in a municipal vote.
Stockton was the first community in California to have an English name; every other community up to that point had been Spanish or Native American in origin. The City was officially incorporated on July 23, 1850, by the County Court, and the first City election was held on July 31, 1850.
