Born 18 June 1974 in Naples' Pomigliano d'Arco municipality, Montella emerged from the youth ranks at USD San Nicola, but at 12-years-old was signed by Empoli, where he made his first team debut at just 17 alongside future Roma coach Luciano Spalletti.
His first two goals in Serie A actually came against Roma at the Stadio Olimpico on 21 September, 1996. He was signed as a Giallorossi player three years later and quickly became one of the fundamental building blocks of the squad that went on to win the title.
