     The main caveat is not to use them inappropriately. They are good for identifying rows that match one set of criteria where those rows are the minority in a large table.

     Take a table Orders for example with an order_status column and distribution of your data over the order statuses as follows:

     • New 5%
     • Backordered 2%
     • In Transit 5%
     • Completed 85%
     • Returned 3%

     If you very often query where order_status = 'New' to get a list of new orders and then most the rest of the time just reference orders directly by ID, then a partial index would be beneficial. In your example of 12 rows out of 120k this is even more true.

     • The disadvantages may be that it costs money, and it adds a bit of complexity to your deployment procedures.
     • The main advantage is an increase in the speed with which the content is delivered to the users.

     When to use a CDN?

     • It will be most effective when you have a popular public website with some type of static content (images, scripts, CSS, etc.).

     Is a CDN a performance booster?

     • In general, yes. When a specific request is made by a user, the server closest to that user (in terms of the minimum number of nodes between the server and the user) is dynamically determined. This optimizes the speed with which the content is delivered to that user.

     A few database advantages:

     • Highly optimized (indexing, query optimization)
     • Stores many different types of data, generally with type-safety
     • Prebuilt abstractions (SQL, database access layers)
     • Relational integrity (foreign key constraints, etc)
     • ACID (Mostly having to do with data integrity, check Wikipedia...)
     • Interactive queries (for debugging, running ad-hoc reporting, etc)

     Plain text doesn't have much except for the most dead-simple application

     • Can inspect on-disk format
     • Extremely simple in every way
     • No need for a server or linked library, etc.

     Basically, if you are doing anything other than the most simple data manipulation (especially if you ever expect to have concurrent modifications, complex relations, multiple users, or even just a lot of data) it's well worth getting used to using a database. PostgreSQL is my favorite, although I'm sure you'll find conflicting views on that one :)

     The first code fragment defines a constructor for an object with properties named Foo and Bar, and then immediately instantiates it with new.

     The second code fragment creates an array with elements "Foo" and "Bar" (and in the process creates two new global variables Foo and Bar, which you probably don't want).

     Whether you want an object with two properties, or an array with two elements, is up to you.

     This question is pretty vague, but here are my general thoughts:

     More methods will not slow your app down to any noticeable degree. That is optimization at really minute levels and is not worth the time.

     Smaller methods are easier to read and ingest. They also are more likely to have only one duty. Both very good things.

     Many methods can force a reader to maintain a large "mental stack" as they read through code and have to keep track of a lot of method calls. As long as methods do only one thing, and are named well, this is usually not a problem.

     It really depends on your situation, what you're writing, etc. But in general, my rule of thumb is several small methods are better than one big, monolithic method.
