Hexagonal chess is a group of chess variants played on boards composed of hexagon cells. The best known is Gliński's variant, played on a symmetric 91-cell hexagonal board. Since each hexagonal cell not on a board edge has six neighbor cells, there is generally increased mobility for pieces compared to a standard orthogonal chessboard.

Hexagonal Chess. Several different chess variants, to be played on a board, not composed of squares, but of hexes have been designed. One of the most well known of these is Glinski's hexagonal chess. Dave McCooey and a friend developed another hexagonal chess variation in 1978-79. Dave writes:
Hexes Chess is played on 54 hexagons. It uses fewer spaces and fewer pieces than conventional chess. The hexagonal format greatly increases the mobility of each piece.
