Introduction. There are three main divisions in the Sermon on the Mount 1) Kingdom Attitudes (5:1-16); 2) Kingdom Righteousness (5:17 - 7:6); and 3) Kingdom Entry (7:7-27). This lesson is included in the section of Kingdom Entry, the Wide Gate and Broad Way, and the Small Gate and Narrow Way.
What stands in the Sermon on the Mount is, from the point of view of Paul, Luther or Calvin, complete heresy; for this is perfectionism, this is righteousness by works, this is Law and not Gospel. The Sermon on the Mount―this is the conclusion to which Windisch comes―stands fully in the context of the Old Testament and of Judaism.
