Storage Area Network (SAN) is used for transferring the data between the servers and the storage devices’ fiber channels and switches. In SAN (Storage Area Network), data is identified by disk block. Protocols that are used in SAN are SCSI (Small Computer System Interface), SATA (Serial Advanced Technology Attachment), etc.
Components of Storage Area Network (SAN):
- Node ports
- Cables
- Interconnect devices such as Hubs, switches, directors
- Storage arrays
- SAN management Software
Network Attached Storage (NAS), data is identified by file name as well as byte offset. In-Network Attached Storage, the file system is managed by Head units such as CPU and Memory. In this for backup and recovery, files are used instead of the block-by-block copying technique.
Components of Network Attached Storage (NAS):
- Head unit: CPU, Memory
- Network Interface Card (NIC)
- Optimized operating system
- Protocols
- Storage protocols: ATA (Advanced Technology Attachment), SCSI, FC (Fibre Channel)
The difference between Storage Area Network (SAN) and Network Attached Storage (NAS) are as follows:

Components of Storage Area Network (SAN) involves 3 basic components:
(a). Server (b). Network Infrastructure(c). Storage
The above elements are classified into following elements like,
(1). Node port(2). Cables(3). Interconnection Devices(4). Storage Array, and(5). SAN Management Software
These are explained as following below.
1. Node port: In fiber channel, devices like,
- Host
- Storage
Nodes consists of ports for transmission between other nodes. Ports operate in Full-duplex data transmission mode with transmit(Tx) and Receive(Rx) link.
2. Cables: SAN implements optical fiber cabling. Copper cables are used for short distance connectivity and optical cables for long distance connection establishment. There are 2 types of optical cables: Multi-mode fiber and Single-mode fiber are as given below.
Other than these cables, Standard Connectors (SC) and Lucent Connectors (LC) are commonly used fiber cables with data transmission speed up-to 1 Gbps and 4 Gbps respectively. Small Form-factor Pluggable (SFP) is an optical transceiver used in optical communication with transmission speed up-to 10 Gbps.
3. Interconnection Devices: The commonly used interconnection devices in SAN are:

A dedicated, fast network that gives storage devices network access is called a Storage Area Network (SAN). SANs are generally made up of several technologies, topologies, and protocols that are used to connect hosts, switches, storage elements, and storage devices. SANs can cover several locations.
Data transfer between the server and storage device is the primary goal of SAN. Additionally, it makes data transmission across storage systems possible. Storage area networks are primarily used to connect servers to storage devices including disk-based storage and tape libraries.

- Fibre Channel (FC): A Fibre Channel is one of the maximum broadly used SAN storage connections. It presents excessive-velocity, low-latency connectivity between servers and storage devices with the use of fibre optic cables. Fibre Channel helps factor-to-factor, arbitrated loop, and switched fabric topologies. It gives excessive throughput, reliability, and scalability, making it suitable for traumatic enterprise environments.

VSAN (Virtual Storage Area Network) is a storage solution that is used to create and manage storage for virtual machines. It is intended for usage in scenarios that leverage cloud computing, especially with virtualized infrastructure like VMware vSphere. Centralized storage management is offered by VSAN for virtual machines and applications running in a virtualized environment.
Storage resources from various physical servers can be combined and shown as a single, shared storage pool using VSAN. The virtual machine disc files (VMDKs) and other data can then be kept in this pool. VSAN dynamically allocates storage for virtual machines according to requirements. It uses distributed architecture and enables IT organizations to pool storage resources and dynamically provide storage to virtual machines on an as-needed basis, VSAN is especially well-suited for cloud computing environments. This can make it simpler to administer virtual environments and lower the expense of obtaining and maintaining real storage.

www.geeksforgeeks.org › storage-as-a-service11 hours ago · STaaS stands for storage as a service. It is a cloud business model in which a company rents its storage area infrastructure to another company or individuals to store the data. The storage provider provides the client with the software required to access their stored data. STaaS eliminates the need for users to purchase and maintain their own ...
