Feb 10, 2023 · But even though historical records may differ on a few points, there was one thing known to be true: Joseph “Black Joe” Hodge was the first non-native settler of Buffalo. A runaway slave, Hodge was captured by members of the Seneca Nation during the Revolutionary war and lived with them until 1784.
Joseph ("Black Joe") Hodge. J oseph Hodge was a former slave who had been captured by the Seneca Indians during the Revolutionary War. He was released in 1784, married a Seneca woman, and they settled in the area sometime prior to 1792. They lived in a log cabin near Winney.
