Stir Crazy is a 1980 American comedy film directed by Sidney Poitier, written by Bruce Jay Friedman, produced by Hannah Weinstein, [2] and starring Gene Wilder and Richard Pryor as two unemployed friends who are given 125-year prison sentences after getting framed for a bank robbery. While in prison they befriend other prison inmates.
Stir is a 19th-century slang word for "prison" that some word historians have suspected to be from Romani stariben, of the same meaning. But a convincing argument of that origin has yet been made. Today, stir-crazy describes any person who has become restless, agitated, or anxious from being or feeling entrapped in some place.

Roger Ebert December 15, 1980. Tweet. Now streaming on: Powered by JustWatch. "Stir Crazy" seems to change its mind, halfway through, about the kind of movie it wants to be. It starts strong: It's a comedy that teams up, once again, Gene Wilder and Richard Pryor, who were the best things in the big 1977 hit "Silver Streak."
