At a Tennessee motel, Luther (Royce Clark), an irate husband, looks for his wife who spent the night with singer Travis Child (Dennis Quaid). Travis sneaks out of his room and calls his sister, Amanda (Kristy McNichol), from the motel office, ordering her to pick him up.
[Chorus] That's the night that the lights went out in Georgia. That's the night that they hung an innocent man. Well, don't trust your soul to no backwoods Southern lawyer. 'Cause the judge in the town's got blood stains on his hands. Well, Andy got scared and left the bar. (And went) Walkin' on home 'cause he didn't live far.
While they are staying in a small Georgia town, Travis gets on the wrong side of the tough local sheriff Seth Ames, and is put in jail. Amanda gets the bail money, and Travis is released, but on the condition that he works as a bartender in a local club to repay the debt.
