Synopsis for "Gotham by Gaslight". In the 19th century, Bruce Wayne recalls the murder of his parents by a highwayman and remembers the bats which swarmed over the murderer. In Vienna, Bruce Wayne is a student consulting with his teacher Dr. Sigmund Freud about the dreams he has had about the deaths of his parents and, significantly, bats.
Gotham by Gaslight is a DC Comics one-shot by Brian Augustyn and Mike Mignola, with inks by P. Craig Russell. The story revolves around a 19th-century version of Bruce Wayne making his debut as Batman just as Jack the Ripper has arrived in Gotham City .
