Luxor (Arabic: الأقصر, romanized: al-ʾuqṣur, lit. 'the palaces') is a city in Upper Egypt, which includes the site of the Ancient Egyptian city of Thebes. Luxor had a population of 1,333,309 in 2020, with an area of approximately 417 km 2 (161 sq mi) and is the capital of the Luxor Governorate.
Luxor, city in Upper Egypt built amid the ruins of ancient Thebes. It remained populated even after the ancient city’s political decline, and in modern times it has been the site of significant archaeological discovery and tourism.
- Karnak Temple Complex. Karnak Temple is the second largest temple complex in the world (Angkor Wat in Cambodia is the largest). For over 2,000 years, starting in 2000 BCE, temples, monuments, and buildings were added to the complex.
