Between the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan in 1979 and the present day, one in four Afghans has been a refugee. At the peak of the crisis in the late 1980s, there were more than six million Afghan refugees. This is the story of Ethan who was one of these refugees who had the opportunity to come to Canada. With the end of the war, Canada loosened its immigration policy and by 1949 accepted over 40, 000 Holocaust survivors. Many French-speaking Jews, seeking refuge from aggression and volatility. Catori's family was removed from her own land, which forced her to come to Toronto. The removal of indigenous peoples from their lands became government doctrine. The removals were achieved through a variety of policy instruments, including assimilation, compulsory schooling by religious orders, forced re-locations to Native 'reserves' and the destruction of equipment and animals used by First Nations hunters. Gabriela left Venezuela in search of better living conditions, escaping food shortages, hyperinflation, a collapsing economy, disease and violence. Sahar came to Canada in the 1980s, in the wake of the 1979 Iranian Revolution.
