It premiered at the Venice International Film Festival on September 5, 2004, and premiered in Toho cinemas in Japan on November 20, 2004.
While working on a divining spell for the King, Howl discovers that a djinn is going to steal the moving castle. He sends Michael and the new apprentice away, and wants to send Sophie away as well but she refuses to go.
Markl is Howl's apprentice, living with him in his castle. He is shown, at first, to be doubtful about Sophie's intentions when she arrives at the castle, but he soon grows to love her as they stay together all day in the castle while she cleans and he sells spells and magic to the civilians.
Sophie (Emily Mortimer) has an uneventful life at her late father's hat shop, but all that changes when she befriends wizard Howl (Christian Bale), who lives in a magical flying castle.
