Episode 36 nails something that Attack on Titan often struggles with: balance. There’s ample screen time for our heroes, great plot development, almost no meaningless teases, and it’s all capped off with intense, emotional action. The stakes were high this week as the Scouts raced to catch up with Reiner and Eren. Episode 36 rises to meet these stakes, delivering an action-packed, emotionally-fueled episode with some nearly tear-inducing moments.
Bertholdt, usually a man of few words, has some of the most interesting dialogue this week. There are two great scenes involving him, but it’s the moment when the Scouts began badgering him with questions that his character truly shines. The entire scene was well animated, as we could see the cracks forming on his character, his resolve starting to crumble. The delivery of his lines was also spot on; you can feel the sadness behind every word. Most of all, this moment made it clear that there is something bigger afoot. It’s alluded to several times since the series began, and finally it’s confirmed as Bertholdt admits that he has no joy in what he’s doing, that he and Reiner are forced into it.
There are many moments in “Charge” that stand out thanks to the animation and delivery of the emotions. I was stunned by Armin’s cruel and sadistic speech about Annie and reveled in the almost robotic nature that Mikasa fell into as she was prepared to kill every single titan between her and Eren. Even beyond any singular character, there is a sense of resolve that permeates everything in Episode 36. Whether it’s the enemies with their desire to be free of the Scouts, or our heroes and their stop-at-nothing attack on Reiner and Bertholdt. All of it adds to the tension that surrounds the episode, but it’s that very tension that made it so compelling and thrilling to watch.
Episode 36 delivers on all fronts. Compelling story moments, intense action and surprise revelations mean there’s something for everyone this week. More than anything though, Episode 36 excelled at displaying emotions.
