Cynic is a metal band unlike any other, and "Focus" is one of those majestic and groundbreaking albums that occurred as a perfect storm of technical death metal, progressive metal and even bits of jazz-fusion all into one.
- US pressing. - Tony Teegarden performed the album's death-style vocals due to Paul Masvidal being in danger of losing his voice at the time. Also for a limited time, Teegarden acted as an unofficial fifth member when he handled the death-style vocals & keyboards during Cynic's European leg of the tour when they opened for Pestilence.
Masvidal originally served solely as the band's guitarist, but later took over as lead vocalist and chief songwriter. Cynic incorporates elements of progressive rock, alternative, and metal. Their first album, Focus, was released in 1993. Cynic disbanded in 1994, reunited in 2006, and released their second album in 2008.
