There were 249 episodes in all, 159 in black and white (seasons 1–5) and 90 in color (seasons 6–8). The backdoor pilot for the series was an episode of The Danny Thomas Show, "Danny Meets Andy Griffith", which first aired on February 15, 1960.
- Scotland, 1945. Outlander begins in post-war Inverness, Scotland, where Claire and her husband, Frank Randall (Tobias Menzies), are trying to reconnect after being apart during World War II.
- Scotland, 1743-1746. When Claire travels back in time, she’s still in the same location: The Scottish Highlands near Inverness, where she meets Jamie, with whom she travels to clan MacKenzie’s seat of Castle Leoch, Jamie’s home of Lallybroch, and other locations around the Highlands.
- Paris, 1744.
