  2. For decades, Marion von Adlerstein contributed her voice and wit to these pages, while in person she was an enduring doyenne of style and charm. Here, former Vogue Australia editor Marion Hume, who is now based in London, pens an homage to her friend of more than a quarter of a century.

  3. Marion von Adlerstein wrote her first piece of advertising copy at the Hordern Brothers department store in 1949. For a girl from the suburbs of western Sydney who had grown up in a fibro housing commission house and left school at 15, it heralded a life she could never have dreamt of.

    • To begin with why don’t you tell us a little bit about yourself – where were you born? Raised? Schooled? I was born at home in Sydney, at Bankstown, and I lived there until we moved to a Housing Commission house at Guildford when I was about twelve.
    • What did you want to be when you were twelve, eighteen and thirty? And why? At twelve I wanted to marry Errol Flynn. At eighteen I wanted to marry my boyfriend.
    • What strongly held belief did you have at eighteen that you do not have now? That marriage and children are every woman’s destiny.
    • What were three works of art – book or painting or piece of music, etc – you can now say, had a great effect on you and influenced your own development as a writer?
  4. Born in Sydney, Marion von Adlerstein worked as an advertising copywriter in Melbourne, London and New York in the fifties and sixties. Between 1976 and 1998 she held several posts with Vogue Australia publications, including Travel Director.
