Thomas Chaucer (c. 1367 – 18 November 1434) was an English courtier and politician. The son of the poet Geoffrey Chaucer and his wife Philippa Roet, Thomas was linked socially and by family to senior members of the English nobility, though he was himself a commoner.
Thomas Chaucer was a prominent politician and administrator in the reigns of Henry IV and Henry V. He served as speaker of the House of Commons several times, held various offices in Oxfordshire and Berkshire, and was the son of the poet Geoffrey Chaucer.
He was Chief Butler of England for almost 30 years, attended 15 parliaments and was Speaker of the House 5 times, a feat not surpassed until the 18th century. He married heiress Maud Burghersh around 1395 and was able to buy Donnington Castle for his only daughter Alice.
Died: 18th November 1434 at Ewelme, Oxfordshire. Thomas was the eldest son of the famous writer, Geoffrey Chaucer, by his wife Philippa the daughter of Sir Payne Roet and sister of Catherine Swnyford, mistress and afterwards wife of Prince John of Gaunt, the Duke of Lancaster.
