Thirlwell released his first 7-inch single, OKFM/Spite Your Face, in 1981, on his own Self-Immolation record label in his first incarnation as Foetus. Over the next few years he would release two more singles, a 12" EP, and four full-length albums, Deaf, Ache, Hole and Nail (Some Bizzare Records).

  3. Rather than a series of rebirths, however, Thirlwell favors evolution, and a staggered evolution at that. In this path, an artsy, already omnivorous teenage Thirlwell can move to London at 18, be transformed, first by punk and synths, then by Nurse With Wound.

  4. Profile: Born: January 29, 1960, Melbourne, Australia. Native of Melbourne, Australia, Jim Thirlwell conceived the basic Foetus concept, when he relocated to London in 1978. The first Foetus release "OKFM / Spite Your Face" appeared in January 1981 on Thirwell's own Self Immolation label.

  5. It was the first Foetus single [“Spite Your Face” b/w “O.K.F.M.”]. I thought, “Okay, once I’ve done that, I’m going to do this one show with Spec Records, and then I’m going to leave.”
