He was married to heiress, actress and philanthropist Dina Merrill until her death in 2017. His last acting credit was 2012 and his last producing credit was in 2015.

Ted Hartley was born on 6 November 1924 in Omaha, Nebraska, USA. He is an actor and producer, known for High Plains Drifter (1973), Race to Witch Mountain (2009) and Mighty Joe Young (1998). He was previously married to Dina Merrill.
In 1989, she married producer Ted Hartley, and they remained married until her death. On May 22, 2017, Merrill died at her home in East Hampton, New York at age 93. She had been suffering from dementia with Lewy bodies. Two of Merrill's four children predeceased her.

Ted Hartley ’46 tours as a congressional liaison for the Pentagon, as a Presidential aide, and as a carrier-based pilot. But in May 1964, Ted Hartley’s promising Navy career ended when his F9F8 fighter jet crashed on the deck of Hornet. Thrown from the plane, Hartley suffered a broken back and was medically retired from the Navy.
