Warning: Full spoilers for the episode below.

"Predators Far and Near," Season 3's second episode, felt a lot like last week's premiere. Aside from the inclusion of Lily and Dorian, the skeleton was pretty much the same here. Vanessa in therapy (and being told to do something outside of her norm - leading her to Dr. Sweet again), Ethan escaping his captors (though the time he mostly facilitated his own release), Victor and Henry further plotting to subjugate Lily, and Sir Malcolm and Kaetenay continuing their journey together.

Plus, another Dracula/Renfield ending - complete with a new vampiric twist! The reveal that Dr. Sweet is, in fact, Dracula. Admittedly, something I did not see coming since, I suppose, I just didn't think Dracula would necessarily someone we'd met on the show already. Whether it be as far back as Season 1 or as recent as last week. I thought finally seeing him would be a really cool thing, but overall I didn't need it to be a familiar face.

So, I mentioned that there were many moments in this episode that felt like stuff we'd seen back in the premiere. And most certainly, the show's now gotten big into "one or two people quickly wiping out dozens of others" given the train shootout and then this week's separate Dorian/Lily, Ethan/Hecate carnage. Which is totally fine if you love mass violence, though having these scenes so close together lessens their impact overall. Especially watching all the men who murdered all the train people last week get murdered themselves this week. It feels like there was an extra step here that wasn't needed.

Anyhow, let's get into all the new things that went down in "Predators Far and Near." Ethan got to wolf out and rip people to shreds while Hecate witched-up and gave him a last minute assist. Plus, Kaetenay contacted Ethan within his dream from thousands of miles way. There are still pieces missing from this puzzle overall though, given Ethan's abject hatred of Kaetenay. Was Kaetenay the one who placed the wolf curse on Ethan?

Kaetenay mentioned to Sir Malcolm that Ethan came to him after killing all of his family, covered in their blood. But did he do that as a wolf or as just a bastard solider who was out killing Native Americans? So the connection between these two, and why Kaetenay considers Ethan to be a surrogate son, needs to get fleshed out more.

The Victor/Henry side plot continued to be the least interesting aspect of the new season, with Henry hitting things a bit on the nose with speak of everyone being two things, "light and dark," duality and all that. The most interesting element here came after Victor left Henry's Bedford Asylum lab (which was pretty sweet as labs of the era go) and sat and watched Lily in Dorian's manor from across the street. Which then caused her to gently confront him and warm him about his obsession over her. An unexpected touch given to her character, who just a few scenes earlier was promising "monumental revenge" on all humanity to the girl she and Dorian had rescued from that speakeasy snuff theater.

WHICH WAS REALLY FREAKY BY THE WAY. Not that we haven't had our fill of torture porn horror over the past fifteen years but there was something about those rich men sitting so close to the girl and the masked torturer. They weren't behind glass or in booths that allowed for anonymity. They all just sat in a semi circle, willing to let their faces be seen by the other sickos who shared their interests.

In closing here, Vanessa decided that her second session with Dr. Seward would be a fine time to, basically, unburden herself of ALL that's happened on the show so far. Starting with stuff from the "Closer than Sisters" flashback episode. And good on Dr. Seward for not immediately calling for Vanessa to be hauled off to the mental ward for such a tale. She did, however, recognize a very dark, brittle spirit and suggested that poor Vanessa go find something joyful immediately. It's nice to see Vanessa gain another misfit ally in her never-ending struggle against evil forces. Though these sessions now come at a cost as, thanks to a Seward's wax cylinder, Dracula will know all he needs to know about Ms. Ives. Even as he pretends to forget her name as Dr. Sweet

"Predators Far and Near" gave us a few new jagged edges to work with, but overall it didn't do much more than move all the pieces on the board forward a few spaces. And while I enjoyed this week's Dracula reveal, I'm wondering if it was necessary to make the Count be a character we'd seen before. I'll hold my final judgement on that though until we...
