Since 1995 he owns and heads PROFIT (Igor Tolstunov Production Company), an independent film production company. From 1995 until 2005 he was Director General of the film company NTV-PROFIT. Since 2000 he heads the Department of Film and TV Production and Management at the Higher Courses for Scriptwriters and Directors in Moscow.
On March 21, 2019, at the pitching of the film companies leading the Cinema Foundation of Russia, producer Igor Tolstunov announced the cast of the film adaptation of Alexei Ivanov's novel Heart of Parma, which will be directed by Anton Megerdichev, responsible for the film Going Vertical (2017).
