Follies, Sondheim’s seventh Broadway production, began as The Girls Upstairs, a collaboration with bookwriter James Goldman about some young women in a Ziegfeld-like extravaganza and the stage-boy Johnnies who courted them.
Hosted by Kurt Peterson and Ted Chaplin and performed by a cast of 50 alongside a 30-piece orchestra, the performance is a Broadway-style concert of original orchestrations of Stephen Sondheim and James Goldman’s Follies, written by Jonathan Tunick, led by Joey Chancey, and directed by Artistic Director Jack Cummings III.
In honour of the fiftieth anniversary of the Broadway opening, we present a glimpse into the original magic that played at the Winter Garden Theatre, in Follies.
