Gulzar (born Sampooran Singh Kalra; 18 August 1934) is an Indian Urdu poet, lyricist, author, screenwriter, and film director known for his works in Hindi cinema. He is regarded as one of greatest Urdu poets of this era.
His father’s name is Makhan Singh Kalra, and his mother’s name is Sujaan Kaur. Gulzar’s father married thrice, so, he has many stepsiblings. One of his elder brothers was an MA in Literature, with whom he used to consult about various literati. Gulzar got married to Rakhee Gulzar on 15 May 1973.
Gulzar, whose real name is Sampuran Singh Kalra, was born on August 18, 1934, in the village of Dina in the Jhelum district of undivided India. His father's name was Makhan Singh, who ran a small business. Gulzar's mother died when he was a suckling child and his stepmother did not treat him well.

Sampooran Singh Kalra, more famous as Gulzar, is an eminent Indian lyricist, film director, screenwriter, poet and author. He stepped into the Indian film industry as part of Bimal Roy Productions and got his first break as a lyricist working with legendary music director S.D. Burman in Bimal Roy’s film Bandini.
His father, Makhan Singh Kalra, was a Sardar and had married thrice (having a son and two daughters from a first marriage with Raaj) before his marriage to who later became Gulzar's mother, Sujaan Kaur. Gulzar said to Kabir that he is Kaur's only child as his mother died several months after giving birth.
