Boso ( French: Boson; c. 841 – 11 January 887) was a Frankish nobleman of the Bosonid family who was related to the Carolingian dynasty [1] and who rose to become King of Lower Burgundy and Provence . Origin. Boso was the son of Bivin of Gorze, count of Lotharingia, by Richildis, the daughter of Boso the Elder by his wife Engeltrude. [2] .

Boso was a Frankish nobleman from the Bosonid-family, who was related to the Carolingian dynasty,[1] who rose to become King of Provence (879 – 887). Boso was the son of Bivin of Gorze, a count in Lotharingia.
Boso rose in favour as a courtier of Charles the Bald. He was even appointed viceroy in Italy in 875. After the death of Charles' son Louis II, Boso refused to recognise Louis' sons Carloman and Louis III as kings of France, and proclaimed himself King of Provence in 879 at Vienne, with the support of the nobility.
Boso became king of Provence in 879. In this article, I shall examine. this relatively neglected group of relatives, tracing the military, terri- torial, and matrimonial strategies that guided their ascent to a position of political power as well as the reasons they were unable to maintain that position for long.
