Elagabalus was born in 203 or 204, to Sextus Varius Marcellus and Julia Soaemias Bassiana, who had probably married around the year 200 (and no later than 204). Elagabalus's full birth name was probably (Sextus) Varius Avitus Bassianus, the last name being apparently a cognomen of the Emesene dynasty.
Sextus Varius Marcellus was a Syrian nobleman who married Julia Soaemias, daughter of Septimius Severus' sister. He had a son, Heliogabalus, who became emperor in 218, and held various procuratorships and governorships under Severus and Caracalla.
After P. *Septimius Geta(2)'s murder (at the end of 211), *Caracalla made Marcellus acting praetorian and city prefect. He was then adlected to the senate and served as prefect of the aerarium militare and governor of *Numidia, where he evidently died, without reaching the consulship.
