The Blood Choke is a Side Quest you receive from Atekka at Thornmarsh. This Horizon Forbidden West The Blood Choke walkthrough will contain information on who to talk to, what to do, and any tips or tricks to help you defeat machines that come your way.

In this Side Quest, Aloy investigates the cause of the polluted water near Thornmarsh. You will receive a free outfit when you complete this quest.

Aloy receives a call from Kotallo on her Focus. He tells her that the people of the Lowland Clan in Thornmarsh are having issues with red algae pollution in their nearby rivers. Aloy decides to pay Thornmarsh a visit to see if she can help.

Aloy travels to Thornmash, a major settlement in the Raintrace far west of Hidden Ember. There she meets Atekka, the commander of the Lowland Clan. She tells Aloy about the red algae, the Blood Choke, in their rivers that are making the people sick. Unfortunately, they are unable to find the source of the pollution and the last squad Atekka sent out has not returned. Atekka decides to go out there to find them and asks Aloy for help.

You can either go with her now, or you can meet up with her along the banks of the Red River. If you go now, she will lead you there and if not, you'll run into her.

Atekka tells Aloy to follow the Red River and see what she finds. Head south from Thornmarsh and follow the river. Along the banks Aloy will find a machine that has been recently taken down. Keep going until you get to the mouth of the river.

More downed machines will be along the path, perhaps evidence of Atekka's squads. Aloy will see splatters of blood among the downed machines. Keep going until you hear the sounds of fighting. Help Atekka in defeating the Fire Clamberjaws.

There will be two Fire Clamberjaws attacking the missing squad. The Fire Clamberjaws are weak against Purgewater damage and strong versus Fire and Plasma damage.

They have a Concussion Sac on the sides of their face that will explode when destroyed. Destroying the Sac will also disable concussion attacks. There are Sparkers on their shoulders that will explode when shot by Shock damage. On their hind legs are Blaze Sacs when will explode when destroyed. Their Tail Duster spreads and coats projectiles in gas. This is a key upgrade resource, so detach it if you can.

The Fire Clamberjaws will be a tough fight. They have a stomp attack that calls up rocks from the ground. They will also jump onto the mountain cliffs and use that to propel them to wherever you are. The Clamberjaws' tail can do significant damage if they get too close to you. Blastslings and Spike Throwers are very useful here.

After the machines are defeated, talk to Atekka, it's time to climb the waterfall. To the left of where Atekka is standing is a grapple point. Use it to start climbing. Cross the rope bridge to the waterfall and start going up. The yellow handholds will take Aloy up to the dam itself, but as she climbs to the right, one of the handholds will break, dropping her to a handhold below. Keep going right around the mountain until you get to the top. Above Aloy will be machines on patrol.

At the top of the waterfall, Aloy sees what has happened. Regalla's forces have taken control of the water supply and have used destroyed machines to create a dam. This dam has been preventing fresh, clean water from flowing to Thornmarsh. Atekka and Aloy must defeat the rebels and their machines to clear the dam.

The small rebel camp is surrounded by mountains with good places to hide and stay in stealth. Go around the outskirts of the camp and take out the rebel soldiers as quickly as you can. There will be a Fireclaw roaming the camp. A ballista on the left side of the camp can do a lot of damage to the Fireclaw and the rebels if you are able to get to it...

The Fireclaw is a Heavyweight Acquisition Machine that is weak against Frost and Purgewater damage and strong versus Fire damage. It has the following components, abilities, and weapons:

•Blaze Sac: Located on its back, this will explode when destroyed.

•Blaze Unit: This can be found on the sides. These will inflict a permanent burning state if destroyed along with the Blaze Sac. This is a key upgrade resource.

•Purgewater Canister: These canisters can be found on its back and will explode when shot with Purgewater damage.

•Sparker: Located on the Fireclaw's rump, if you hit these with Shock damage it will trigger an elemental explosion.

This will be a challenging battle. Watch for its charge as it will come at you with claw swipes. It will throw flaming rocks your way so pay attention when it stands on its hind legs. It also has a lava AOE attack that forms at your feet. Aim for the canisters and sacs and you can inflict some damage.

Once the rebels and the machine have been defeated, search the camp. There will be a machine lure near the dam, machine scrap parts towards the back of the camp, the ballista, and a message for Gunda datapoint to scan by the waterfalls. This proves that the rebels were luring machines to their camp and then overriding them. The ones they couldn't o...
