Harper, first published in 1892.Set during the American Civil War and Reconstruction era, the story follows Iola Leroy, a mixed-race woman who is raised in freedom in the North without knowledge of her African heritage but later experiences the challenges of racial discrimination and enslavement.
Iola Leroy or, Shadows Uplifted is one of the first novels published by an African-American woman. It tells the story of a wealthy Mississippi planter who frees and marries his mixed-race slave. They have two children, Iola and Harry, that are raised without knowledge of their mixed background and educated in the North.
