This review contains mild spoilers for the Adventure Time: Distant Lands - Obsidian special episode, now streaming on HBO Max.

It's hard to remember a world before Adventure Time. Pendleton Ward's beloved and beautiful Cartoon Network series ushered in a new age of animation and the newest HBO Max special, Adventure Time Distant Lands: Obsidian is a perfect example of why the series made such a huge impact. But its biggest strength lies in just how accessible it is to new viewers.

Continuing the legacy of such a lauded show is a rough proposition, but so far the HBO Max Distant Lands specials are balancing the task perfectly. Obsidian could easily be enjoyed by hardcore fans of the animated series, or brand new viewers who've always wanted to live their best lesbian cottagecore lives. What?? Oh yeah, this 45-minute episode continues the story of Marceline and Princess Bubblegum, who shared a groundbreaking kiss during the finale of the show, officially cementing one of animation's most heated ships in Adventure Time canon. Interestingly though, the story is so well constructed that even people who have little to no understanding of the characters prior to coming in will be able to enjoy this fantastical romp about aging, falling in love, and settling down.

It's the kind of message that's especially powerful right now, and just like the best episodes of the series, Obsidian delivers it in an organic, thoughtful, and entertaining way. Not just in terms of the writing or emotional satisfaction, but also in aesthetic and visual ingenuity. The colors pop, the character designs shine, and the new, enticingly strange worlds make you wish you could stay in them for far longer than 45 minutes. The special episode ends as Marceline shares a new Olson track that will likely become just as iconic and connected to the pair as "I'm Just Your Problem" and "Everything Stays the Same." But this time it's a beautiful, hopeful track about the love they share, and in that way, you could say that it's love that defeats the Dragon in Obsidian.

With only two more entries into the Distant Lands series to go, if the quality of these specials stays this strong, HBO Max will have truly added to the canon of Adventure Time in a way that feels necessary, expansive, and experimental. It's something that pretty much every current reboot, reimagining, or reunion of a classic series could learn a lot from.

Sure, the Adventure Time: Obsidian special could be called fan service. But this is fan service of the highest order. Thankfully, it's also a legitimately great animated feature that can be enjoyed by new viewers while still satisfying die-hard Adventure Time fans, deepening the backstories of beloved characters and the mythology of the world, whil...
