Günther Messner (18 May 1946 – 29 June 1970) was an Italian mountaineer from South Tyrol and the younger brother of Reinhold Messner. Günther climbed some of the most difficult routes in the Alps during the 1960s, and joined the Nanga Parbat-Expedition in 1970 just before the beginning of the expedition due to an opening within the team.

Oct 6, 2022 · In 2005, a heatwave melted out a significant part of the glacier beneath the Diamir Face where Messner claimed Günther had been killed. A leg bone and a three-layer leather boot—replete with a custom cord that Günther had rigged thirty-five years earlier—were compelling evidence that Messner had been right all along.
What is known now is that Reinhold and Günther Messner descended the Diamir Face, thereby achieving the first traverse of Nanga Parbat and second traverse of an eight-thousander after Mount Everest in 1963. Reinhold arrived in the valley six days later with severe frostbite, but survived.
