Apr 15, 2024 · The Forbidden City, also known as the Palace Museum, lies in the city center of Beijing, and was once the Chinese imperial palace of the Ming and Qing Dynasties (1368 - 1911). It was listed as a World Heritage Site in 1987 and is the largest, best-preserved ancient timber-built palace complex in the world.

The Forbidden City was built in 1406. From 1406, for 14 years, the Ming court constructed what the Guinness Book of World Records calls the "largest palace in the world", with 150,001 sq m (1,614,600 sq ft) of floor space and about 9,000 rooms. In 1406, Beijing was destroyed and its people were impoverished (see Beijing History ).
The Forbidden City was first built in the early-15th century as the palace of the Ming emperors of China.
