The Ninth Fort (Lithuanian: Devintas Fortas) is a stronghold in the northern part of Šilainiai elderate, Kaunas, Lithuania. It is a part of the Kaunas Fortress , built in the late 19th century. During the Soviet occupation , the fort was used as a prison and way-station for prisoners being transported to labour camps .
The Ninth Fort massacres of November 1941 were two separate mass shootings of 4,934 German Jews in the Ninth Fort near Kaunas, Lithuania. These were the first systematic mass killings of German Jews during the Holocaust.
The Ninth Fort is an essential stop for anyone visiting Kaunas with an interest in the Holocaust and/or Lithuanian history. The Soviet built museum had had a makeover in terms of content and the recently done exhibits have many interesting artifacts on display (and, importantly, descriptions in English).

Ninth Fort. Nazi killing site four miles from the center of Kovno (Kaunas), Lithuania, which served as the execution and burial site for Jews from Kovno and for German, Austrian, and Czech Jews shipped to Kovno during the Holocaust. Originally built as a military fortress, during German occupation it became a site of torture and mass executions.
In the summer of 1941 Jewish men and women from Kovno were captured by Lithuanian nationalists in random acts of violence and sent to Fort VII, where they were raped and/or murdered. In July alone over 3,000 were killed at this fort.
